Rep. Mark Takano Issues Statement on Federal Government Shutdown Developments

Washington DC – Rep. Mark Takano issued the following statement after Speaker John Boehner announced he would not attempt to pass a clean continuing resolution before the government would shutdown:

“I am shocked, but not surprised, that Speaker Boehner and the Tea Party wing of the Republican Party decided at the eleventh hour to send another continuing resolution to the Senate that includes provisions that affect the Affordable Care Act. Time and time again, House Republicans have shown their eagerness to hold our economy captive so they can score political points and now they have sent our government on a path where a shutdown at midnight tonight seems inevitable.

“Not only will this shutdown cost taxpayers over $150 million a day, but it will also cut many essential services that American families rely on. Speaker Boehner must do the right thing and abandon the Hastert Rule, like he has done numerous times this year, and put a clean continuing resolution up for a vote. I am confident that the House Democrats and the few remaining reasonable Republicans will vote in favor of one of Congress’ most basic duties and end this fiasco.”
