Rep. Mark Takano Statement on For-Profit College Rule Being Overturned

Washington DC - Rep. Mark Takano released the following statement after a U.S. District Court judge overturned a Department of Education rule that limits how the schools recruit students:

“Today’s decision by the D.C. District Court overturning a Department of Education rule that limits bonuses to recruiters based on the number of students they enroll who graduate is misguided and goes against the interest of students and taxpayers. With the for-profit college industry accounting for nearly half of all student loan defaults and widespread reports of deceptive recruiting methods, it is important that we do all we can to limit practices that encourage fraud. While I look forward to the Department of Education amending their rule, the best way to solve this problem would be to pass legislation that would reign in the bad actors, protect students and save taxpayer money. Earlier this year I announced a piece of legislation that would do just that - the PRO Students Act. With the for-profit college sector growing and student loan default rates rising, we cannot afford to put this problem off for much longer."
