Rep. Mark Takano Statement on Mass Shooting in Orlando

Washington, D.C. – Rep. Mark Takano (D-Calif.) released the following statement regarding the tragic mass shooting at Pulse, an iconic gay nightclub in Orlando.

“I am heartbroken for the victims of this tragedy and their families. There are no words that can lessen their loss or heal their pain, but I hope they find some comfort knowing the LGBT community and the entire country grieve with them in this difficult time.

“On too many occasions, the LGBT community has been forced to overcome moments of profound sadness, and on each of these occasions we’ve emerged stronger and more resilient. We will once again choose love and compassion over hate and intolerance. This is the theme of Pride month and it will not be lost in this senseless tragedy.

“In the coming days, we will examine the circumstances that led to this horrific attack and draw lessons that we hope can prevent future violent acts. There are no simple or satisfying answers but there are facts we must confront. We must consider that – despite great advances towards LGBT equality – hateful rhetoric about LGBT people is still prevalent in America. We must agree that directing hostility towards the Muslim community is not an appropriate or acceptable response. We must recognize that our current gun laws provide dangerous people easy access to assault weapons.

“I hope we have the courage to confront these facts and build a safer and stronger America. That is what the victims and their families deserve.”
