Rep. Mark Takano Statement on Secretary of Education Nominee Betsy DeVos

Washington, D.C. – Today, Rep. Mark Takano (D-Calif.) released the following statement after the Senate confirmation hearing for Secretary of Education nominee Betsy DeVos.

“Last night, Betsy DeVos demonstrated to the public that she is fundamentally unprepared and unqualified to lead the Department of Education. Her apparent confusion over the basics of education policy – including the debate over progress and proficiency, the federal requirements protecting students with disabilities, and the need for gun-free schools – should frighten educators, parents, students, and anyone who cares about the health of America’s education system.

“In addition, under a Secretary DeVos, for-profit schools receiving federal funding would be allowed to continue exploiting students and taxpayers with no accountability or oversight.

“The Senate has no choice but to reject her nomination and demand that President-elect Trump find a new nominee who believes in public education and will protect every student’s right to attend a school that empowers them to reach their full potential.”
