Rep. Mark Takano to Attend Summit of the Americas with Bipartisan Congressional Delegation
Washington DC – Tomorrow, Rep. Mark Takano (D-CA) will travel to Panama with a bipartisan group of members of Congress during the Summit of the Americas, a two day international summit with leaders from North America, Central America and South American, and the Caribbean.
Rep. Takano will be joined by Rep. Jeff Duncan (R-SC), Rep. Eliot Engel (D-NY), Rep. Sam Farr (D-CA), Rep. David Sckweikart (R-AZ), Rep. Charles Rangel (D-NY), Rep. Joaquin Castro (D-TX), and Rep. Bradley Byrne (R-AL).
While in Panama, the delegation will meet with President Juan Carlos Varela of Panama, President Horacio Cartes of Paraguay, President Tabare Vazquez of Uruguay, President Michel Martelly of Haiti, President Ollanta Humala of Peru, President Juan Manuel Santos of Columbia, President Salvador Sánchez Cerén of El Salvador, President Otto Pérez Molina of Guatemala, President Juan Orlando Hernandez of Honduras, numerous Central American officials, and other stakeholders in the region.
“The Summit of the Americas provides lawmakers and heads of state a unique opportunity to meet, build relationships, and take action on issues that will benefit those in the Americas,” said Rep. Takano. “With the recent thawing of U.S.-Cuba relations, this summit proves to be more important than any before it. While meeting with leaders from the Americas, I hope to get a clearer understanding of how these new developments will benefit the region, and how we can continue to move forward and grow our partnerships.”

The Summits of the Americas are institutionalized gatherings of the heads of state and government of the Western Hemisphere where leaders discuss common policy issues, affirm shared values and commit to concerted actions at the national and regional level to address continuing and new challenges faced in the Americas. The Seventh Summit of the Americas will be held in Panama City, Panama on April 10-11, 2015.
