Rep. Mark Takano Votes Against DHS Funding Bill

Washington, D.C. – Today, Rep. Mark Takano (D-Calif.) released this statement after voting against legislation that provides funding to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

“I voted against the Department of Homeland Security funding bill because I refuse to be complicit in funding President Trump’s racist anti-immigrant agenda and aiding his cruel mass deportation and detention efforts.

“The funding bill brought up for consideration did not provide the necessary mechanism to effectively check and restrict the Trump Administration from reprogramming and misusing funds to advance their anti-immigrant agenda. It also provided a high-level of funding for ICE detention beds that would continue to allow the administration to keep more immigrants in detention – we know from reporting and oversight visits Members of Congress have conducted that immigrants often face inhumane treatment and prolonged detention in these facilities.

“As a Member of Congress, I have the moral obligation to stand up for the dignity and safety of immigrants in America, therefore, I could not in good conscience support this funding package.”
