Rep. Mark Takano Votes for War Powers Resolution
Washington, D.C. – Today, Rep. Mark Takano (D-Calif.) released this statement after voting for H.Con.Res. 83, a War Powers Resolution to terminate the use of the U.S. Armed Forces to engage in hostilities in or against Iran.
“After President Trump engaged in unlawful and unconstitutional military actions against Iran, Congress had the duty to assert its sole authority to declare war. This War Powers Resolution is an essential check on the president’s unauthorized use of military force against Iran.
“However, Congress’ need to reassert its sole authority to declare war extends beyond the passage of this War Powers Resolution. We must also pass legislation to repeal the 2002 Authorization for Use of Military Force (AUMF) to prevent the president from engaging in new military conflicts and restrict the Trump Administration from using Pentagon funding to engage in military actions against Iran.
“The presidents’ unilateral, unlawful, and unconstitutional actions led us to the brink of another war, a war that the American people have expressed opposition to. It is incumbent upon Congress to make it clear that President Trump must not lead us into another endless war without Congressional approval. We must not go to war with Iran.”
