Rep. Takano: GOP Tax Plan is Yet Another Assault on California

Washington, D.C. – Today, Rep. Mark Takano (D-Calif.) released the following statement in response to the Republican tax framework unveiled this morning.

“For a second time this week, Republicans have released a major policy proposal that would severely damage California’s economy. Like the GOP health care plan, the tax proposal released today steals money from California and redistributes it to states that are coincidentally more politically aligned with the Republican agenda.

“Eliminating the state and local tax deduction would cost our state roughly $100 billion every year. Californians already contribute more money to the federal government than they receive. It is unacceptable to ask them to pay even more so President Trump, Paul Ryan, and Mitch McConnell can cut taxes for the wealthiest families and corporations in America.

“Throughout the health care debate, Republicans warned that we cannot afford to ensure every American has access to affordable health care. One day after that effort failed, they introduced a plan that would leave a $2 trillion hole in the federal budget.

“Our tax code needs to be updated to give working families a fair shot at financial security. Instead, this framework further tilts our economy in favor of the wealthiest Americans at the expense of Californians.”
