Rep. Takano Hails President Biden’s Historic Apology on Indian Boarding Schools
RIVERSIDE, CA – Today, Rep. Mark Takano (CA-39) released the following statement hailing President Biden’s historic apology on Indian boarding schools:
“To look to the future sometimes means acknowledging the sins of the past, which is why President Biden’s historic apology on Indian boarding schools is so important. Coming from a family of Japanese Americans who endured the incarceration camps of World War II, I know firsthand the power of the government acknowledging and striving to repair the legacy of devastating policy decisions.
“While this is a historic day, I urge Congress to build on the momentum and pass the bipartisan Truth and Healing Commission on Indian Boarding School Policies Act of 2024. The research and reporting that this bill would yield will be significant in documenting what Native communities have long known to be the true legacy of these schools.
“Finally, let us recognize the incredible work of so many activists and tribal leaders whose efforts led to this moment. Today would not be possible without them.”
