Rep. Takano Introduces Legislation to Rename Riverside Post Office After Waudieur “Woodie” Rucker-Hughes
Riverside, CA – Rep. Mark Takano (D-Calif.) introduced legislation to designate the facility of the United States Postal Service located at 4150 Chicago Avenue in Riverside as the “Woodie Rucker-Hughes Post Office Building.”
“I am thrilled to be honoring the life of an icon by renaming the Riverside Post Office after Woodie Rucker-Hughes,” said Rep. Mark Takano. “Woodie spent her life working to demolish educational barriers, challenging injustices, and moving our community forward every single day. I was lucky enough to call her a dear friend. Woodie touched my life, and the lives of so many others with her kindness and encouragement. She continues to inspire me to work to make this community – and this country – even better than she left it.”
“My family and I are over the moon with heartfelt joy and appreciation. Thank you to Congressman Mark Takano and the Riverside community for all of the support for my mother. I miss her more than I can express, but I know she can rest knowing that her legacy will continue for lifetimes to come,” said Teliece Hughes, daughter of Woodie Rucker-Hughes.
Woodie Rucker-Hughes was a history teacher at John W. North High School and an administrator for the Riverside Unified School District, and she also served as the NAACP Riverside Charter President. Woodie passed away in 2018 after dedicating her life to the betterment of her community.
