Rep. Takano Issues Statement on National Defense Authorization Act

Washington DC – Rep. Mark Takano (D-Riverside) issued the following statement after voting in favor of the National Defense Authorization Act:

 

“Earlier today, I voted in for favor of the National Defense Authorization Act, which ensures that our military remains the most advanced, most capable force in the world. This legislation contains important provisions that support March Air Reserve Base and its vital mission for our nation. I’m also pleased to see that military bases with Remotely Piloted Aircraft (RPA) schoolhouses, like March, will be prioritized for recapitalization to the most up-to-date RPAs.

 

“I also support the provisions mandating that combat operations in Afghanistan be completed by the end of 2013, the accelerated withdrawal of troops be finalized by the end of 2014, and that Congress authorize any future deployment of troops.

 

“However, I have serious concerns about several elements within the final bill. Specifically, I am very disappointed that efforts to ban indefinite detention on U.S. soil failed. Furthermore, I voted against provisions that would prevent the transport of cleared detainees at Guantanamo Bay and the closure of the Guantanamo Bay detention facility, and strongly object to their inclusion in the final bill.

 

“While this bill is far from perfect, it is important for the Department of Defense to be funded at levels that allow it to protect our nation from potential threats so Americans can live their lives freely, without fear.”
