Rep. Takano Meets with Border Agents, Mexican Government Officials at U.S.-Mexico Border Facility

Washington DC – Earlier this morning, Rep. Mark Takano traveled to McAllen, Texas with a delegation of Congressional members to meet with members of the Mexican Chamber of Deputies, U.S. border patrol and enforcement officials and a delegation from the Mexican government.

Rep. Takano visited Hidalgo International Bridge, the McAllen Border Patrol Station, and the Department of Health and Human Services BCFS Harlingen Children’s Facility.

While at the Hidalgo International Bridge, Rep. Takano was briefed on admissibility processing, limitations and challenges of the bridge’s current infrastructure, custodial care, transportation, and medical clearances, along with a tour of the holding areas.

At the McAllen border patrol station, Takano toured the central processing center and Sally Port, and received a briefing on the operations and processing done at the station.

The Congressional delegation then met with Members of the Cámara de Diputados (Chamber of Deputies) to discuss paths forward.

“With the recent surge of unaccompanied children coming across our border, it is important that Members of Congress to see with their own eyes the realities on the ground,” said Takano. “Today’s tour of the Hidalgo International Bridge, the McAllen Border Patrol Station, the centralized processing center, and the Department of Health and Human Services’ Harlingen Children’s Facility was informative and enlightening. If we are to truly solve our border crisis, our system must ensure that our border is safe and secure, and that our processing methods treat people the dignity and respect they deserve. I was proud to meet with several Mexican government officials as well, and I hope that our two nations can continue working together, as we look to overhaul our broken immigration system.”
