Rep. Takano: Overtime Rule Needs to Be Implemented, Not Rewritten
Washington, D.C. – Rep. Mark Takano (D-Calif.), Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Workforce Protections, released the following statement after the Department of Labor filed a Request for Information, which is intended to delay, weaken, and eventually repeal the overtime rule. The rule, finalized under the Obama administration, would restore overtime protections to millions of middle-class American workers.
“In an administration defined by chaos and instability, President Trump’s betrayal of American workers continues to be among the most reliable aspects of his presidency. By filing this Request for Information, the Trump administration is denying millions of workers the overtime protections they deserve.
overtime rule is a powerful example of how the rules of our economy are rigged against American workers. Employees working 50- and 60-hour weeks, and struggling to cover their basic expenses, are being cheated out of the overtime pay or time with their families they have earned. Despite his promises to stand up for the forgotten workers, President Trump is refusing to stand up for their right to be paid for the hours they work.
“This rule was the product of a two-year rulemaking process that incorporated feedback from nearly 300,000 public comments. It does not need to be reviewed or rewritten. It needs to be implemented immediately.”
