Rep. Takano Statement on Confirmation of Labor Secretary Alexander Acosta

Washington, D.C. – Rep. Mark Takano (D-Calif.), ranking member of the Subcommittee on Workforce Protections, released the following statement after Alexander Acosta’s confirmation as U.S. Secretary of Labor.

“In its first 100 days, the Trump administration has pursued an agenda that is openly hostile to working families. By opposing a rule requiring financial advisers to act in the best interests of their clients, by rolling back workplace safety reporting standards, and by refusing to fight to restore overtime pay for middle-class workers, the administration has already undermined the mission of the Department of Labor. Reversing President Trump’s stance on labor issues and restoring the White House’s respect for workers is now the responsibility of Secretary Alexander Acosta.

“Secretary Acosta’s success will be defined by a simple question: Does President Trump’s Labor Department side with workers or corporations? With Secretaries Mnuchin, Tillerson, Ross, and DeVos, corporate interests are already well represented in the president’s cabinet. American workers need a champion in this White House, and I hope Secretary Acosta will take seriously his responsibility to stand up for them.”
