Rep. Takano Statement on the Passage of the Employment Non-Discrimination Act in the Senate
Washington DC – Rep. Mark Takano issued the following statement after the United States Senate passed the Employment Non-Discrimination Act by a 64-32 vote:
“Today’s bipartisan passage of the Employment Non-Discrimination Act in the U.S. Senate affirms that discrimination of our LGBT workers can no longer be tolerated. Discrimination in the workplace takes the form of harassment, fewer job opportunities, and a gap in wages between LGBT and straight employees. It’s time for the House of Representatives to join the Senate and stand for equality. I urge Speaker Boehner to bring the legislation to the floor of the House and ensure equal employment rights for all.”
The Employment Non-Discrimination Act bans workplace discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.
A report released by Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), Vice Chair of the U.S. Congress Joint Economic Committee, found that more than one in five LGBT employees have experienced workplace discrimination, and that turnover caused by such discrimination costs American business an estimated $64 billion annually.
