Rep. Takano Statement on the Supreme Court Blocking Ohio Early Voting

Washington DC –Rep. Mark Takano released the following statement after the United States Supreme Court blocked early voting in Ohio:

“Yesterday’s decision by the Supreme Court’s conservative bloc to limit early voting in Ohio goes against one of our nation’s fundamental rights – the right to vote. Early voting in Ohio and other states allows millions of voices to be heard that might otherwise be unable to participate in our democracy. By shortening early voting and eliminating ‘Golden Week,” the six-day period when residents can register and vote on the same day, the Supreme Court has helped special interests who seek to disenfranchise low-income and minority voters who are unable to make it to the polls on Election Day.

“The best way to combat this attack on democracy would be to pass the Voting Rights Amendments Act – a bipartisan piece of legislation that would expand access to the polls and restore requirements for states that have a history of voting discrimination. The right to vote is the foundation of our democracy and we should be doing all we can to increase participation, not reduce it.”
