Rep. Takano: “The Department of Education’s Federal Commission on School Safety report is a complete sham.”
Riverside, CA – Today, Rep. Mark Takano (D-Calif.) released this statement after the U.S. Department of Education released the finalreport from the Federal Commission on School Safety:
“The Department of Education’s Federal Commission on School Safety report is a complete sham. A better title for this report would be: A guide to trample students’ civil rights, sell more guns, and blame everything on minority students.
“As a public school teacher for 24 years, I find it insulting that Secretary DeVos would release a report that calls for rollbacks of protections from discriminatory practices used against students of color, incentivizes arming teachers and staff, and does not address the underlying causes of the epidemic of school shootings in America.
“It says a lot about Secretary DeVos and this Administration’s priorities that even reports that should solely be focused on improving the safety of our schools are plagued with partisan, biased provisions that undermine the safety and rights of the same students they should be in place to protect. The Department of Education and the Trump Administration must promote school safety and defend students against discriminatory practices, and Congress will hold them accountable to ensure that they are doing so.”
