Takano Supports Bill to Protect Veterans’ Education Benefits

WASHINGTON, DC – Yesterday afternoon, Congressman Mark Takano spoke on the House floor to support a bill that would reestablish the VA Advisory Committee on Professional Certification. In another example of bipartisanship from Members of the House Veterans Affairs Committee, the bill was passed shortly following Mr. Takano’s comments. The bill will allow the Advisory Committee to ensure the benefits veterans have earned are being used to gain licenses in career fields of their choosing.

Originally sponsored by Congresswomen Kirkpatrick (D-Az), a fellow Subcommittee Member where Mr. Takano is Ranking Member, the Advisory Committee had originally expired in 2006. Since then it has become evident the board was needed to ensure the integrity of institutions receiving payment for veterans licensing are maintained. Veterans benefits are enticing for institutions who can lure veterans into licensing programs where veterans can use their post 9/11 GI Bill funds. The Advisory Committee would provide guidance on the standards organizations that provide licensing and certification testing for payment must meet.

“These are men and women who have real work experience but are still struggling to find steady, meaningful employment,” said the Congressman, “by passing this legislation we will be sending a clear message of our respect for military members’ service and their experience as professionals.” The bill was passed with no opposition and now awaits Senate action.
