Rep. Mark Takano Introduces Intelligent Technologies Initiative Act of 2015
Washington DC – Rep. Mark Takano (D-CA) today introduced the Intelligent Technologies Initiative Act of 2015, which will create a grant program to improve transportation safety, efficiency and system performance through innovative technology deployment and operations.
This legislation would direct the Secretary of Transportation to establish a grant program for eligible entities to implement Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) technologies in their region. Intelligent Transportation Systems makes use of existing technologies to improve efficiency, prevent accidents, and decrease gridlock. Examples include meter ramps to improve highway flow, electronic fare payment systems and real time updates about roadway conditions.
“ITS technology makes our roads safer, our transportation systems more cost-effective and efficient, and helps to reduce the amount of time Americans spend sitting in traffic. This legislation will build on current knowledge and help municipalities and states expand their use of ITS technology to ensure routine travel is better and safer,” said Rep. Takano.
