Rep. Mark Takano Statement on Gainful Employment Rule Being Upheld by District Court

Washington, DC – Rep. Mark Takano released the following statement after the United States District Court for the District of Columbia upheld the Department of Education’s gainful employment rule:

“I am pleased the District Court in Washington DC has upheld the Education Department’s gainful employment rule and that another hurdle is cleared in the fight to protect students from bad actors in the for-profit college industry. The fact remains that too many for-profit colleges are taking advantage of students who are just trying to better their lives, and the gainful employment rule will increase both transparency and accountability. For-profit colleges that mislead students and leave them with mountains of debt and worthless degrees must be held accountable and the court’s decision today is a step in the right direction.

“To protect students even further, Congress should pass my PRO Students Act legislation, which will ensure students have access to important and accurate information and data, strengthen oversight and regulation, and hold schools accountable for violations and poor performance. I hope that my colleagues will listen to the people of their district and consider some common sense regulations for this industry.”
