Rep. Mark Takano Statement on the Final Passage of the American Rescue Plan
Washington, DC – Today, Rep. Mark Takano (D-Calif.) released this statement following the final passage of the American Rescue Plan, a bold and robust COVID-19 relief package.
“One year ago, the coronavirus pandemic upended our lives and unleashed devastation in communities across America. Since then, we have suffered great loss as a nation and Americans are ready to turn the page on this difficult chapter. To do that, we must follow public health guidance and make investments that will help families make it through this crisis and put us on a path toward recovery. That’s exactly why Democrats in Congress and President Biden worked together to pass the American Rescue Plan.
“With the passage of this $1.9 trillion relief bill, help is on the way to millions who are unemployed, to families suffering financially, to small businesses looking for more support, to communities with people who are eager to get vaccinated, and to children who want to be back in their classrooms. As Chairman of the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs, I worked to secure provisions in the American Rescue Plan that will help get our veterans back to work and ensure that they can receive the care they need. I’m also proud that we closed the 90-10 loophole in this bill, which predatory for-profit colleges exploit to aggressively recruit servicemembers and veterans and waste their education benefits. I have been a strong advocate for closing the 90-10 loophole for many years, and I’m glad that this bill will finally achieve that and hold predatory for-profit colleges accountable.
“Families need and deserve support to survive this pandemic. The American Rescue Plan is a progressive piece of legislation that will help get us through this difficult time and lay the foundation to emerge from this crisis stronger than before. I’m committed to working with my colleagues and with President Biden to move our country forward – passing the American Rescue Plan is only the beginning.”
