Rep. Mark Takano Statement on the House Passage of the American Dream and Promise Act

Washington, DC – Today, Rep. Mark Takano (D-Calif.) released this statement following the passage of H.R. 6, the American Dream and Promise Act, in the House of Representatives. This legislation allows U.S.-raised immigrant youth known as Dreamers – individuals enrolled in the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program – to earn lawful permanent residence and American citizenship. Additionally, H.R. 6 includes protections and a pathway to citizenship for Temporary Protected Status (TPS) and Deferred Enforced Departure (DED) beneficiaries.

“By passing the American Dream and Promise Act in the House, we are telling the more than 825,000 Dreamers in America that their home is here and that we have their backs. Dreamers are Americans, too. They go to school in this country, they have jobs in this country, they serve in the military of this country, and it’s time for them to finally live in this country without the constant and crippling fear of deportation. H.R. 6 provides a much-needed pathway to citizenship for Dreamers.

“I’ve met with Dreamers in my district and I assured them that I will be in Congress fighting for them. Today, we are one step closer to granting them legal protections, but our fight doesn’t end here. We must continue working to make our immigration system more humane – one that is reflective of our values as a nation of immigrants. Passing the American Dream and Promise Act in the House is progress, now I urge my Senate colleagues to swiftly advance the bill and send it to President Biden’s desk for signature.”
