Rep. Takano Donates Pizzas to Striking West Virginia Teachers
Washington, D.C. – Rep. Mark Takano (D-Calif.), a public-school teacher for 24 years, made a $100 donation today to buy pizzas for the West Virginia teachers striking for a living wage and to express his support for increasing wages for teachers across the country.
“I know from experience that teaching is one of the most meaningful and difficult jobs imaginable,” said Rep. Takano. “A teacher’s salary will never reflect their impact on our communities and no teacher joins the profession in search of wealth, but we must at least provide a living wage that allows them to focus on helping students reach their full potential. If teachers are struggling to meet basic expenses, we will lose talented educators and discourage future teachers from entering the classroom.
“I am proud to stand with educators in West Virginia and across the country. I hope this moment is a wake-up call that we have been paying America’s teachers far too little, for far too long. It is time to reinvest in the American education system.”
Rep. Takano taught at Rialto Unified School District from 1988 until he was elected to Congress in 2012.
