Rep. Takano Statement on Budget Deal
Washington, D.C. – Rep. Mark Takano (D-Calif.) released the following statement regarding the budget agreement, which President Trump signed into law this morning.
“The budget agreement that President Trump signed into law this morning contains many provisions that I support. Securing a decade of funding for the Children’s Health Insurance Program, increasing support for Community Health Centers, and lifting the ‘sequester caps’ that have strangled domestic spending for several years are among the important Democratic priorities included in this deal.
“Unfortunately, I have no confidence that Congressional Republicans and President Trump are genuinely committed to finding a bipartisan solution for Dreamers. Absent an incentive to work with Democrats, I have serious concerns about the prospects of an agreement on DACA. For that reason, I could not support the budget agreement.
“The debate over Dreamers is about so much more than 800,000 young people who were brought here by their parents as children. It is about what type of country we are, what values we represent, and whether we accept our basic responsibility to treat people with dignity and respect.
An overwhelming majority of Americans support a bipartisan solution for Dreamers. I am incredibly disappointed that President Trump and Congressional Republicans are not among them.
