Rep. Takano Statement on Release of “Nunes Memo”
Washington, D.C. – Today, Rep. Mark Takano (D-Calif.) released the following statement after Republicans on the House Intelligence Committee, with support from the Trump administration, declassified and published a misleading, incomplete, and partisan memo attacking the FBI and Justice Department’s investigation into the Trump campaign’s connection to Russian interference in the 2016 election.
“The decision by House Republicans and the Trump administration to published the ‘Nunes memo’ is an unprecedented, shameful, and dangerous attempt to mislead the public and undermine Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s ongoing investigation.
“The memo intentionally omits several key pieces of information regarding the DOJ’s FISA application and subsequent renewals as well as the FBI’s investigation into the connections between the Trump campaign and Russian interference in the 2016 election. These omissions – combined with their decision to block the release of the Democratic response – were clearly motivated by Republicans’ desire to misrepresent the truth and undermine the public’s confidence in the FBI, the Justice Department, and Robert Mueller.
“Speaker Ryan and House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes must stop this reckless, politically motivated assault on our law enforcement institutions. They must move to release the Democratic response, which corrects the misrepresentations in the Nunes memo, and they most support bipartisan legislation to protect the Mueller investigation from interference.”
