Rep. Takano Statement on Trump Administration’s Decision to Repeal Clean Power Plan

Washington, D.C. – Rep. Mark Takano (D-Calif.) released the following statement today in response to the Trump administration’s decision to repeal the Clean Power Plan, which was adopted by President Obama to curb greenhouse gas emissions from power plants.

“The Trump administration’s decision to repeal the Clean Power Plan is yet another example of its willingness to ignore scientific facts and endanger the health of our communities just to protect the profits of fossil fuel companies. The timing of this announcement, which comes as human-caused climate change is contributing to more intense and deadly weather events, is further evidence that the administration does not appreciate the consequences of its actions.

“As a child growing up in Riverside, I still remember the unrelenting smog that made it hard to breath and difficult to see the mountains surrounding our city. California’s ambitious and effective environmental policies have improved daily life for every one of our residents and protected countless children from the health conditions that result from excessive smog.

“It is incumbent upon state officials to build on the progress we’ve made and continue to protect the air and water in the Inland Empire and throughout California.”
